Yoga & You August 2010 – International Teachers

August 2, 2010

Jules Febre

Yoga Awakening Africa was extremely grateful and honoured to be able to attend one of Jules Febres classes while he visited Cape Town’s Yoga Zone last month. After the class he took some time to answer our questions about yoga and yogic philosophy. These concepts and his answers will be shared with all our readers over the next few months in our featured news section – so keep an eye out for that. For now a small introduction to Jules.

Jules grew up in a section of New York City known as the Lower East Side. He grew up in the L.E.S. during a very rough period surrounded by violence, drugs and a general atmosphere of anger. He practiced yoga (haphazardly) since he was 6 years old and then at the age of 13 he wanted to desperately go to India and study Ashtanga Yoga under the watchful eye of Pattabhi Jois. His aunt and uncle (Sharon Gannon and David Life) agreed to this on condition that he had to practice yoga regularly, everyday for a period of at least 3 months, before they agreed in allowing him to go. He jumped at this offer and has been practising yoga regularly ever since.

Since then Jules has also decided that it is vital to give back to the community in which he grew up in. A community in which he has experienced much heartache and pain. He started Hip Hop Asana with two other Jivamukti Yoga teachers in New York City in Homeless Shelters, High Schools and Recreational Centres for inner city youth. Combining hip hop music & his street smarts, he teaches classes geared toward those interested in the hip hop culture and yoga; especially those who cannot always afford to pay for classes.

Next month, find out how Jules feels about South Africa, the people and his views on non-attachment!

Ana Forrest

Ana Forrest is recognized worldwide as a pioneer in yoga and emotional healing. Born crippled, her own life trauma and experiences, including physical abuse, drug addiction, epilepsy, and bulimia, compelled her to create Forrest Yoga and the Forrest Yoga Educational Library.

Ana took her first yoga class on a dare at age 14 and became a certified yoga instructor at age 18. In her search to become a better healer and teacher, she studied Native American medicine and ceremony, Homeopathy, Hands- On Healing, Martial Arts, Psychotherapy, and Regression Therapy. Ana Forrest teaches yoga from an intuitive and highly developed understanding of the human body and psyche. She openly shares her wisdom in the yoga room. Every breath and yoga asana combine to create a healing dance between student and teacher.

Ana challenges the student to access their whole being. She teaches the student to use Forrest Yoga as a path to find and clear the emotional and mental blocks that dictate and limit their lives. With Ana’s meticulous guidance, students cultivate attentiveness and deep care to their own practice and life process, so each class becomes an exhilarating journey.
