About SevaUnite

May 2, 2011

Seva is a Sanskrit word, meaning service. It is selfless service which is performed without any thought of reward or personal benefit. Seva is good not only for the spiritual and moral upliftment of the individual, but for strengthening relations between people.

SevaUnite is an organisation with the main aim of facilitating selfless service. We initiate projects in impoverished communities aiming to uplift and empower these communities and attempt to involve volunteers directly in the projects, giving them the opportunity to experience the uplifting effects of selfless service. We encourage and support our volunteers and help them to see the work as a means of personal growth or a path to meaning and self realisation. In this way the interactions that occur in the projects are a win-win with everyone involved being uplifted.

Through SevaUnite, individuals who wish to perform some form of voluntary work can:-

  • find a suitable project where he/she can perform seva on a regular basis which is commensurate with his/her skills or supporting in developing new skills.
  • Be encouraged to start their own upliftment projects.
  • Learn more about themselves through the path of seva, and to experience the positive and uplifting benefits practicing seva brings. This hopefully leads to living a more meaningful and purposeful life.
  • Cultivate a feeling of connectedness with themselves, other human beings and the world in which we live.
  • The skills offering can range from teaching yoga to children, prisoners, and HIV + groups, to setting up vegetable gardens, or reading to the elderly – the need is endless!

Through our various projects, SevaUnite works with the following groups of people: –

  • HIV + people
  • Prisoners
  • Children aged
  • Impoverished communities
  • Elderly
  • NGO’s and groups working in various social sectors including HIV prevention, addiction, abuse, health, education, and community upliftment.

SevaUnite aims to create the following within the communities and groups we work with: –

  • Self empowerment, providing means in which people are able to do things for themselves that helps to improve their quality of life.
  • Tools that help boost their immunity and manage chronic and terminal illnesses like HIV, TB, cancer etc.
  • Poverty alleviation, education and support.
  • Training in life skills.

SevaUnite is a non-profit, non religious organisation run by a dedicated small group of Yoga teachers.

In our society, there are many citizens who wish to be involved in some form of community work aimed at contributing either to socioeconomic development of a community or the spiritual upliftment of people. However due to the myriad of organisations, interested individuals often do not know whom to approach or are unable to find a suitable project.SevaUnite therefore provides a vehicle through which sincere volunteers can offer their skills and experiences or any resources on a part-time basis.

SEVA UNITE is guided by the following principles:-

  • A love for selfless service.
  • A commitment to a non-racial, non–sexist and democratic society.
  • A sincere commitment to serve all people regardless of race, nationality, creed, or colour.
  • Honesty and integrity.
  • Professionalism in our dealings with organisations/projects.
