An auspicious time to marry

May 21, 2012

When electing an auspicious time for a marriage, we are trying to give the union the best birthchart that we are able.

Choosing a date and time using astrological principles is no guarantee that the marriage will endure and be happy, because timing can’t overcome the difficulties the couple bring to the marriage. But it can enhance the ways in which the couple work together well, and help to soften the ways in which they knock up against each other.

One reason why we can make this claim is that the astrologer tries to balance the Sun and Moon and place them in a good relationship to each other. The Sun and Moon represent the couple in the marriage, whether it is a heterosexual or same-sex marriage.

When balancing the luminaries, we don’t want one to overwhelm the other. So the ideal time to start the ceremony is during daylight hours and when both the Sun and Moon are above the horizon.

We would also want to make sure the Moon is waxing (yes that again!) and, ideally, is at an angle of 60 degrees or 120 degrees to the Sun. The list of “strong Moon days” is in bulletin 10 and can also be found very easily at the Goggle calendar drawn up especially for these astro bulletins. I would avoid scheduling a marriage during a Mercury retrograde (Rx) period, for two reasons. The couple wouldn’t their marriage’s birthchart to have the largely avoidable feature of communication difficulties.

And on the very practical level, if the wedding ceremony means family and friends will be travelling to attend and if there is a fair amount of planning involved in the celebration (translation: the reception requires logistics of the kind that landed humans on the Moon) then keep clear of Mercury Rx.

For a similar reason, keep clear of times when Venus (the symbol of love) is retrograde. Fortunately theses phases are rare and don’t last long. The dates for the next few years are:

  • May 15 to June 26, 2012
  • December 13, 2013 to January 30, 2014
  • July 25 to September 5, 2015

There’s plenty to be getting on with here. Now you just have to make sure all the astrologically good stuff comes together on a weekend!

With love and smiles

Margie
