Yoga Day at Ananda Kutir Ashrama.

The Yoga Awakening Africa team, Juanita, Briony and myself, decided to take part in the yoga day at the Ananda Kutir Ashrama in Rondebosch East on Sunday 22nd July. For some, who aren’t generally early risers, especially on a Sunday, being at the ashram posed to be a little challenging, however Jennifer Stephens, (my favourite yoga therapist), led the asana class where we started off walking on rainbows to warm up the body and to bring a spring into our step. Moving our awareness through the chakras throughout the class, her gentle nature and abundant yoga knowledge is always shared so openly and with enthusiasm and it was the perfect way to start a yoga day. It followed with a lovely meditation with Mother Yogeshwari and Swami Parvatiananda.

The theme of the yoga day was “Awareness” and after a delicious breakfast Mother Yogesh gave us a little talk on “awakening” where we explored the idea of awareness and happiness. She said that the first step towards understanding happiness is to be aware, aware of oneself and one’s own feelings. We need to connect with and understand who we are, we need to learn to love ourselves, be happy with ourselves, because we won’t find true happiness or love by looking for it elsewhere or in someone else, this just leads to disappointment and unnecessary pain. I feel this is so true. We can’t ask our partners, family or friends to constantly be a form of support and love for us, we need to learn to and be able to stand on our own two feet, accept and love ourselves unconditionally and fully realise that we are worthy of all the blessings we have in our life and only when we are able to do that truthfully and wholeheartedly, will we be able to understand and accept others for who they are.

We were treated to a brilliant Indian lunch and then spent the rest of the afternoon doing a workshop on awareness as well as a little more meditation and having time to catch up with everyone else who was there. It is always so nice to spend a day with like-minded people who are all looking to make a positive change in this world we live in.

From Juanita, Briony and myself, thanks to everyone who came to the yoga day. It was lovely meeting you all, interacting with you and sharing your energy. We look forward to seeing you at the next one.

Until then,

Namaste`
